Socialisation is a key part of helping sled dogs adjust to life outside of a kennel environment. Many arrive unsure, anxious, or overstimulated by the world around them. By introducing them gently to new experiences, you help build their confidence and trust.
Start slow. Give your foster time to settle in before taking them to busy places or introducing lots of new people. One-on-one introductions are best at first—calm environments and gentle handling go a long way.
Watch their body language. If they seem unsure, back off and give them space. Forcing interactions can do more harm than good.
Try short, positive experiences: a quiet walk in the park, a calm visitor to the house, or a relaxed car ride. Praise calm, curious behaviour and allow plenty of time for rest in between.
Every new sound, smell, and sight is part of their journey back to confidence. Celebrate the small wins—they matter.
