Understanding Sled Dog Behaviour

What makes these breeds unique

· Foster Care Guidelines

Sled dogs—like Huskies, Malamutes, and their mixes—are intelligent, independent, and full of character. Understanding their natural instincts will help you provide the right environment for your foster.

They have been bred for endurance and drive, which can be both wonderful and challenging in a home environment.

Here are some key traits to be aware of:

  • Energy to spare. These dogs were bred to run and work, so daily exercise and mental stimulation are essential.
  • Escape artists. Secure fencing is a must—many sled dogs can jump, dig, or squeeze their way out of surprising places.
  • High prey drive. Some sled dogs may struggle with small pets, so careful introductions (or avoiding altogether) is safest.
  • Vocal – Howling, talking, and singing are normal (and often charming!) behaviours.
  • Strong bonds. Despite their independence, sled dogs form deep connections with their people. They thrive with structure, patience, and companionship.

By recognising and respecting these traits, you’ll not only keep your foster safe—you’ll also enjoy the playful, loyal, and loving side of these amazing breeds.
